Season 4

Episode 41

“The way we, society, look at the architect is like a useless element in the construction industry. People look at us as if we only exist to satisfy the whim of the rich, forgetting that the development of architecture – that we entitled "modern architecture" – has to do with a social compromise of the architect and with the progress of architecture for everyone, not only for the rich people.”

Episode 42

“Faced with this exponential population growth that is felt, deep down, all over the planet, construction with traditional methods will not, clearly, be able to respond promptly.”

Episode 43

“Obviously, the term affordable housing is relatively recent. Sometimes people say: «ah, but that doesn't look like social housing» - but it isn't either. The aim was not to look like it. Houses don't have to be labelled.”

Episode 44

“We like to think that this project is something that makes sense to people and that doesn't just make sense for architects, for our self-induced language, and our narratives. Not. It is for the people.

Episode 46

“In summer, we can turn the house to the North and, therefore, the entire surface of the glazed house is protected from the direct sun lights; in winter, we do the opposite. The house can turn according to the sun (…), trying to heat it with solar energy.”

[Pedro Bandeira about the Rotating House]

Episode 47

“When we design houses or design other things, we always make plans, films, or play scripts. [At these moments, we think] «well, people live a certain way right now. But if they have children, they would behave differently. They would have to find space for their children to play.» So, when we design, we make a panoply of films and scripts and then, finally, build the scenario.”

Episode 48

“There is, indeed, a utopia - the utopia is to return to what is most reasonable, what lasts the longest. [At bottom], what is most natural. The essential always resist.”

Episode 49

“Architects think that architecture is not political. I have a different opinion, and that's why I often give the example of Sérgio Bernardes. I think architecture is always political. It may even be ideological. And, therefore, our political values have to be expressed. The architect’s values.”

Episode 50

“It is a building that has always been very close to us. We always saw it from the window when we passed by. And this proximity allowed that... it allowed us to go to the site a lot during the project... And then, during the work, we did a daily follow-up. I mean, we went to work every day. We had an architect who practically only did that. It was, in fact, a project of great passion and hard work. We really put a lot of effort into this project.”

Episode 51

“Because we believe that buildings have to be, first and foremost, for people to feel good and comfortable. They should also feel surprised, but it is essential that they feel comfortable.”

Episode 52

“I would say that this building or this project – it is not a building because it includes several – is almost a city's metaphor: it is the meeting of several different realities. It is the stage where people meet.”

[Manuel Roque]
